چکیده

Forest water use efficiency (WUE), the ratio of gross primary productivity (GPP) to evapotranspiration (ET), is an important variable understand coupling between and carbon cycles, assess resource use, ecosystem resilience, commodity production. Here, we determined WUE for managed loblolly pine plantations over course a rotation on coastal plain North Carolina in eastern U.S. We found that forest annual GPP, ET, increased until age ten, which stabilized thereafter. varied annually (2–44%), being higher at young plantation (YP, 3.12 ± 1.20 g C kg?1 H2O d?1) compared mature (MP, 2.92 0.45 d?1), with no distinct seasonal patterns. Stand was strongly correlated ET (R2 = 0.71) GPP 0.64). were tightly coupled 0.86). Radiation air temperature significantly affected 0.71 ? R2 0.82) monthly scale, but not WUE. Drought 0.35) more than 0.25) or 0.07). A drought enhanced MP (19%) YP (11%), reduced 7% 19% YP, respectively, resulting (27–32%). Minor interannual variation (age > 10) suggested functioning became stable as stands matured. conclude cycles are coupled, different characteristics ages hydrologic regimes. suggests can be readily predicted from vice versa. The tradeoffs cycling should recognized management achieve multiple services (i.e., supply sequestration).

The influence of environmental, soil carbon, root, and stand characteristics on soil CO2 efflux in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations located on the South Carolina Coastal Plain

While the effect of soil temperature and moisture on soil CO2 efflux (Ec) has been widely investigated, the relationship between Ec and soil carbon (C), root, and stand parameters has not been comprehensively examined or quantified across extensive spatial and temporal scales. We measured Ec in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) stands located on the South Carolina Coastal Plain across sites, seaso...

Soil CO2 efflux in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations on the Virginia Piedmont and South Carolina Coastal Plain over a rotation-length chronosequence

We measured soil surface CO2 efflux (Fs) in loblolly pine stands (Pinus taeda L.) located on the Virginia Piedmont (VA) and South Carolina Coastal Plain (SC) in efforts to assess the impact climate, productivity, and cultural practices have on Fs in the managed loblolly pine ecosystem. The effect of stand age on Fs was examined using a replicated chronosequence approach in which stands ranging ...

Determining the best form factor formula for Loblolly Pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations at the age of 18, in Guilan- northern Iran

In order to determine the best form factor formula for Loblolly Pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations in Talesh (Western Guilan province-Iran), a number of 110 trees were selected based on their distribution in diameter classes, from 12 to 34 cm (in a two- cm diameter interval). First, several quantitative factors including diameter at breast height, diameter at 0.65 m of height, and diameter at st...

Soil change and loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) seedling growth following site preparation tillage in the Upper Coastal Plain of the southeastern United States

To determine the relationship between changes in soil physical properties due to tillage and growth of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedlings, we measured soil moisture and penetration resistance for a range of tillage treatments on two Upper Coastal Plain sites in Georgia and correlated these measurements to the growth of individual seedlings. The five tillage treatments were: no-till (NT), ...
